The city of Portland, Maine, is getting ready to get its snowiest season yet.
On Wednesday, the city plans to add a new snow removal program to its existing snow-clearing program.
The program will begin on Jan. 31.
According to the city’s website, the new program will allow for the removal of a maximum of 1.8 inches of snow per day.
The city has had a heavy snowfall of more than 4 inches in recent weeks.
The new program is expected to save more than $30,000 per day, or about $3,500 per employee, the department said.
The city’s snow removal crews will be able to clear the streets of any snow that accumulates and leave no residue on the sidewalks, the Portland Police Bureau said in a news release.
The department will also be working with local contractors to provide additional snow removal.
This story will be updated throughout the day.
